Here’s the Scoop on Your Estimated Liposuction Recovery Timeline
Liposuction is typically done on an outpatient basis. However, if you are having a rather large amount of fat removed, you may need an overnight stay in the hospital. No matter the route you take, you do need someone to drive you home after your procedure. The answer to your question, “How much downtime should I expect after liposuction?” depends on your recovery:
- First three days: You’ll be given compression garments to wear. It’s important you wear them, as they help reduce swelling and aid in contouring the treatment site. You may also have a surgical drain to prevent fluid build-up. Expect soreness and moderate pain. You’ll have a prescription medication for pain to take as needed. Plan on having help around the house. You’ll need to rest!
- Weeks 1 – 2: You’ll still be wearing your compression garments, but you’ll notice a reduction in pain and soreness. While many patients find they can return to work after two weeks, you may not be able to if you have a particularly demanding job.
- Weeks 3 – 5: By now, the soreness and pain should be gone, but you still may have some swelling. In fact, it can take a few months for the swelling to completely disappear.
You’ll be able to see visible results now, and those will continue to improve over time. While you’ll be able to do some exercise, anything strenuous should be put on hold.
- Week 6 and beyond: At this point, most bruising and swelling should be gone, but don’t be surprised if there is still a bit of swelling left. You’ll be able to remove your compression garments, and you’ll have no restrictions on your activity unless your surgeon tells you otherwise. By now, you’ll see the full results of your liposuction.
